To design, make and install a ceramic tile panel in relief for an open plan kitchen space.
Pedro Kalache met the client visited the location.
The client had recently visited the Alhambra Palace in Granada, Spain. He wanted a piece of ceramic art inspired by the highly ornate and geometric Moorish reliefs found inside the palace.
The designer/maker then researched Moorish motifs and relief work. The client was presented with a range of designs based on this research. The initial designs were then further developed into a finalised design.
Plaster molds were made from the patterns of the finalised design. These molds were then pressed into rolled out slabs of clay creating relief and texture. These were cut into tiles then dried and fired to earthenware temperatures. Color was then added to the tiles through glazes which were then glaze fired.
The finished tiles were then mounted, framed and installed.
The finished piece provided a balanced focal point to the open plan kitchen space. Adding texture, colour and light to a previously dull corner of the room.
The client wanted a design that used the wild boar as its central theme. The piece was comissioned as a birthday present for the client's father who was fascinated by this animal and had a large collection of different wild boar art.
A set of initial designs were presented to the client. The client then selected a design to be further developed.
The final design was processed into ceramic decal transfers which were fired onto standard plain white tiles. The tiles were mounted and framed - ready for installation.
The client's father was very pleased with his unique and tailored birthday gift. He installed the piece in the front porch of his house.
